Lower School Resources
In the 1950s, teacher Loyal Bearss changed education in the Jackson area by instructing children to read using a method that was uncommon at the time—phonics.
Bearss and 10 families took a chance on phonics and formed Jackson Academy. JA’s progressive methods soon had students reading well beyond their grade level. That passion for reading continues to characterize students’ experience at JA, as opening a book is often the first step on a life-long journey.
