Fifth Grade

The fifth grade is a year of capping off the lower school experience with more growth, more responsibilities, more class rotations, and more adventures along the way. Fifth grade students discover new activities that could spark their interest as they are readily being prepared for their next journey.

Fifth Grade Curriculum

Reading, Writing and Grammar

Reading in fifth grade has a goal to build vocabulary skills through reading and writing while also incorporating literary elements like figurative language. Students will get the opportunity to participate in a novel studies of the book Wonder learning all elements of literature and spelling while also being able to study character education. With a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar, students use weekly writing logs to practice skills. They will leave with a solid foundation in writing so they are confident in themselves and eager to share their work with peers and teachers.

Math

Fifth grade Math starts to amp up the rigor of skills as students will become proficient in several advanced skills based on their prior basic fact knowledge. They will cover fractions, decimals, and take many 4th grade concepts to the next step. Using the given curriculum, they will cover multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers, basic operations with decimals, along with several other skills.

They will cover cells, ecosystems, human body systems, atoms, state of matter and so much more! Through a very explorative study, students will leave with a base knowledge of skills that will prepare them for more advanced science studies throughout their academic journey.

Social Studies

5th grade social studies will consist of geography and the history of the United States. We begin our road trip through history with geography and the first people in North America then moving to the explorers from the European countries. Our travel studies conclude with the colonization of North America. Along our road trip of history, students also study the Revolutionary War, The Declaration of Indepence, and the Constitution of America.
