Creative Events Celebrate Upcoming Holiday
Unique traditions for each grade leading up to Christmas give students special memories of their school year. Teachers and parents put creativity and love into the events that celebrate the season and teach important lessons.
Students Value Giving Opportunities
Thursday began JA’s school-wide Food Drive with We Will Go Ministries. Food collected will help those in the community who are in need this holiday season. Donation collection ends on Tuesday.
A Winter Wonderland Greets Preschoolers
All dressed in holiday pajamas, current and prospective preschoolers hopped, twirled, sang, posed for photos as they waited outside the entrance to the magical Preschool Christmas Open House on Thursday evening. Snow billowed above, and holiday music brought out excited dances and wiggles.
Christmas Carpool Is Fun!
Warm smiles are everywhere at JA, even on a cold carpool morning. Faculty and students wore holiday attire, such as Christmas sweaters and accessories, as they helped preschoolers to their classes. All across campus, holiday music created positive energy to begin the school day.
Art Students View Original Works of Picasso
JA art students studied the work of Pablo Picasso and Romare Bearden at the Mississippi Museum of Art on November 16. Art teacher Susan Ingram gave each student an assortment of images to locate and identify by recording the title and artist. Students emailed four images to Ingram: three selfies with a great work of art and one selfie with a work of art that did not appeal to them.
Collaboration Offers Professional Voice Experience
A faculty member and two seniors recently participated in a professional vocal project that used skills taught at JA. Director of Performing Arts Kerri Sanders and students Boston Hollingsworth and Sydney Thaxton served as voice talent for an audiobook project released on Audible in November.
No-Shave November for a Cause
Around the beginning of November, senior Hiser Funderburg went to Head of Upper School Brandi Richardson’s office. The senior proposed the idea of allowing Upper School males to grow out their facial hair. Richardson talked with Hiser about how there should be a purpose or something of substance to go along with it.
Three Consecutive Year Wins!
The Clarion-Ledger announced Sunday that Jackson Academy was named Best Private School in its poll in which Mississippians vote for their most admired businesses, organizations, people, and events. In three other categories, voters named JA the Best Place to Work, the Performing Arts Center the Best Live Music/Concert Venue, and the JA Carnival Best Festival/Fair.
SGA Leadership Luncheon
The Student Government Association hosted a Leadership Luncheon at JA, inviting student government executive boards from surrounding independent schools and universities. Student leaders from Hartfield Academy, Jackson Prep, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, Mississippi College, Mississippi State, and The University of Mississippi attended.
